Is Thinkific Better than Udemy?
You’ve heard of these two platforms in the world of online courses, but is Thinkific better than Udemy? Let’s find out.
How are we judging them?
Can you access important data?
Udemy obtains user information through their social media or other online accounts. This includes the name, profile picture, account ID number, location, gender, email address and a comprehensive list of contacts. However, the platform doesn’t share any of this information with course creators. So, you won’t have any data about the people accessing your course.
Thinkific is a tad more forthcoming with user data. In its privacy terms, they specifically mention that user data will be shared with third-party vendors like community builders to help them conduct marketing campaigns. Thinkific also collects information through the user’s online accounts, provided the user has allowed it in their privacy settings.
Who owns your content?
Imagine spending hours on creating and selling your course, only to have your hosting service to take over half your profits away. It’s very frustrating and surprisingly common, especially if you’re using a marketplace. Udemy is based on this business model. If your customers find your course through Udemy’s website, then you get to keep only 37% of the revenue generated. However, if someone buys a course directly through a link you’ve promoted, then you get 50%.
Thinkific is geared towards a subscription model. You don’t need to give a cut of your profits from any sale. Although it has a free version, you can only use it for a limited time. There aren’t a lot of features included either. For the paid plans, you will need to pay a flat rate depending on the plan you choose. Prices vary as follows:
1. Basic: $39/month
2. Pro: $89/month
3. Premier: $399/month
Can you create your OWN brand?
Udemy gives you a course creator that’s easy to navigate. You can upload your course and personalize it with your own landing page and images. However, you’ll need to follow a particular style template, which limits your opportunities for branding. With Udemy, you have access to a large audience that’s actively looking for educational content. This makes it easier to find your target audience. But you won’t have much scope for building your brand, which means it’ll be difficult to stand out from the other course creators.
Thinkific provides more customization options with a comprehensive site builder. Apart from choosing one of its default themes, you can personalize further using HTML/CSS coupled with a templating language called Liquid. If you want to make significant changes, you’ll have to get a designer onboard and upgrade your plan.

The difference is in our DNA
We're content creators, teachers AND community builders.
And, we know how everything ties together to make a business.
We've been teaching online since 2018. We ran one of the world's largest educational communities from 2019-2021 and scaled to $500,000 revenue by selling cohort-based courses. We kept hopping from one software to another because the experience of actually using all available software is bad.
This led us to build Scenes - an all-in-one platform to run your courses, cohorts, webinars, events, voice chat rooms, etc. - on mobile & web (100% white-labeled).
